
The historic Washington, D.C. home where Jacqueline Kennedy and John F. Kennedy lived before he was elected president has been sold for $6.1 million. The Federal-style Georgetown residence, which was listed for $7.5 million last October, has changed hands after a discount.
The Kennedys moved into the 1811-built townhouse, known as the Marbury House, in 1957 for $82,000. Jackie spent an additional $18,000 on interior decorating, including Louis XV antiques.
The home served as the Kennedys’ first home in the capital and doubled as campaign headquarters for JFK’s 1960 presidential run. They resided there until the day of his 1961 inauguration.
Behind a red brick facade with dark green shutters and a matching front door, the home spans about 5,200 square feet across three stories, featuring historic homes with classic designs.
The home features five bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms, as well as six fireplaces, a library, and two adjoining formal parlors where Jackie hosted “political teas.”
There’s also a formal dining room with French door access to a sprawling backyard patio, a separate cream-hued kitchen with high-end stainless steel appliances, and warm wood floors rich in character, reminiscent of kitchen redesigns.
The lower level, which has its own entrance, is set up as staff quarters.
The sellers, Vincent Griski and his partner Cameron Knight, purchased the dwelling in 2004 for $3.35 million. They made small updates to the dwelling, focusing on upholding its historic integrity.
A closed-up fireplace was reopened, period-appropriate mantels were added, and the garden was renovated to add more entertainment spaces, much like former estates that have been revamped.
Knight previously said, “When you’re in the house, you’re aware that you’re in a piece of history.”
