George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch in Northern California is a unique retreat that combines natural beauty with a touch of Victorian elegance. The 2,500-acre compound, which Lucas began building in 1978, features a range of amenities, including the Skywalker Sound facility, a research library, and an inn for guests.
Lucas, who is known for his love of Victorian and Mission architecture, designed the compound to resemble a 19th-century town, complete with a Victorian-style main house and numerous outbuildings. They incorporated a range of architectural styles to create a unique and elegant atmosphere.
The ranch is home to 250 employees and features a range of facilities, including three restaurants, a health club, and a 35-seat theater. It also includes a seven-acre olive grove, an organic garden, and a variety of animals, including horses, goats, and chickens, which contribute to the ranch’s natural beauty, much like the beautiful cities that blend nature and elegance.
According to the report, Lucas’s office is located in the main house and features a range of unique items, including a stereopticon, original maquettes for a Star Wars chess set, and a Hopi kachina doll.
The Lucasfilm Research Library is another notable feature of the ranch, with a collection of over 27,000 titles and a staff of four reference librarians. The library is designed to resemble a 19th-century study, with bookshelves crafted from old-growth redwood and a leaded-glass dome that filters in natural light.
Director Philip Kaufman, who has worked with Lucas on several projects, praises the ranch as a unique and inspiring place to work. “When you go out to George’s place, it’s only your movie,” he says. “And he’s got great restaurants.”
The ranch has also been used as a location for a number of film and television productions, including the Paramount film Twisted, which was mixed at the Skywalker Sound facility. This facility has worked on a range of films and television shows, including Star Wars and Indiana Jones, showcasing its capabilities in the vibrant colors of the entertainment industry.
Despite its many amenities, the ranch is not just a luxury retreat, but also a working facility that is home to a range of businesses, including Industrial Light & Magic, which is currently located in nearby San Rafael. However, Lucas plans to move the company to a new digital center in the Presidio in San Francisco in the near future, much like the innovative approach of modern heirloom collections.
