Ferreyros completed the delivery of the 1,000th Caterpillar mining truck to operate in Peru, establishing a new benchmark for the country’s mining operations. The CAT 798, a 400-ton vehicle, traveled from Houston, Texas, to the port of Chancay, covering over 5,370 kilometers before reaching its final destination. The company managed the entire process, from logistics to assembly, and formally handed the truck over to Compañía Minera Antamina, where it now contributes to production activities.
Complex Logistics for a Massive Machine
The truck was broken down into major components, including a 70-ton chassis, and transported in 13 oversized cargo units across Peru’s difficult terrain. The route included elevations of up to 4,500 meters. Ferreyros’ technical team then reassembled the vehicle, which measures 10 meters wide and 8 meters tall, integrating mechanical, electrical, and specialized welding systems.
The CAT 798 is engineered for extreme performance, featuring a 400-ton payload capacity, the largest in its category, along with adjustable power settings and a durable engine designed for prolonged use. The model is already deployed across Peru’s leading mines, including Las Bambas, Cerro Verde, Toquepala, Cuajone, and Toromocho, in addition to Antamina’s expanded fleet of 45 units.
Industry Growth and Operational Efficiency
The handover event at Antamina brought together executives from both companies, emphasizing the truck’s role in daily operations.
Strengthening Peru’s Mining Capacity
Santiago Basualdo, Ferreyros’ general manager for large-scale mining, described the achievement as proof of high standards and operational effectiveness in Peru’s mining industry. The CAT 798’s arrival also signals rising demand for heavy machinery, as mining operations like Antamina scale up production. Its high-altitude capabilities and heavy load capacity position it as a vital tool for boosting output in difficult conditions.
