The CAT 798, a 400-ton model, now operates at Compañía Minera Antamina’s 4,300-meter-high site in Áncash.

Ferreyros handed over the 1,000th Caterpillar mining truck to Compañía Minera Antamina in Peru, a landmark for the country’s heavy equipment industry. The ceremony took place at Antamina’s high-altitude site in Áncash, perched 4,300 meters above sea level, where a CAT 798, a 400-ton model, now operates within the mine’s fleet.

This milestone arrives after sustained expansion in Peru’s mining sector. The first Caterpillar truck entered the country in 1994, a 100-ton CAT 777 deployed at Cerro Verde. Since then, Ferreyros has broadened its product range, introducing 400-ton CAT models in 2011 and launching autonomous mining trucks—the CAT 794—five years later. Ferreyros provides continuous support for these vehicles in active mines around the clock.

Over the past 30 years, Caterpillar trucks have become essential to Peru’s major mining operations, including Antamina, Antapaccay, Cerro Verde, Constancia, Cuajone, Las Bambas, Mina Justa, Pierina, Quellaveco, Toquepala, Toromocho, and Yanacocha. These projects underpin the nation’s economic output and industrial capabilities.

Gonzalo Díaz Pró, Ferreyros’ general manager, described the 1,000th truck as proof of the sector’s growth and the confidence placed in both companies. “This success highlights the mining industry’s development, our clients’ trust, and our enduring partnerships,” he stated.

Santiago Basualdo, Ferreyros’ manager for large-scale mining, stressed the company’s focus on efficiency and technological progress. He outlined plans to accelerate electrification and integrate emerging technologies, matching the evolving demands of clients.

The delivery aligns with recent upgrades in Peru’s mining fleets. Antamina has recently incorporated 45 ultraclass CAT 798 trucks, while Minera Las Bambas awarded Ferreyros a contract for 45 units of heavy machinery, including 27 CAT 798s for its entire ultraclass fleet.

Ferreyros maintains 24/7 mine support through a network of certified facilities, including repair centers in Lima and La Joya (Arequipa), a robotized parts distribution hub, on-site warehouses, monitoring centers, and specialized labs. The company’s workforce undergoes training to ensure top-tier service standards.

The newly deployed CAT 798 at Antamina exemplifies the latest advancements in mining transport, merging heavy payload capacity with sophisticated automation. Its introduction shows Peru’s transition toward larger-scale operations and deeper technological adoption in the industry.
