Shelving System Eases Fear of Commitment

The String Shelving System, created by Swedish architect couple Kajsa and Nisse Strinning in 1949, has been a standard in Stockholm apartments for decades. It was introduced to me by a coworker in my 20s and I had been interested in it ever since.

As someone who is hesitant when it comes to installation-heavy shelving, I was concerned about securing the String system for my space. However, after working with the String PR team, I felt confident in my final choice. They helped alleviate my concerns and provided valuable guidance.

The delivery process was relatively smooth, with all components arriving in separate boxes. Although the shelves are made of dense particleboard with a wood veneer, making them heavy, I was able to bring all the boxes up to my fourth-floor walk-up without too much effort.

Setup and Installation

The setup process was relatively straightforward, with the wire brackets attaching to the wall with a single visible screw on each corner. I opted to hire a handyman, as I don’t possess any drilling skills and didn’t want to damage my rental apartment’s walls. The installation took under an hour, with the most time-consuming part being figuring out which shelves went where using the provided diagram.

Each piece looks similar when unboxed, so we had to do some planning to get things laid out and aligned on my slightly wonky walls. It was a manageable task, and the end result was well worth the effort.

According to the String Furniture site, a single wall shelf can start at around $350, while a pre-designed unit similar to mine can cost around $2,800. Pricing can vary widely, as it is a customizable system.

Storage and Style

I’ve been using my String system to store books, magazines, and other items, and I’m impressed with its sturdiness. The slanted magazine shelf is a favorite feature, breaking up the grid and adding visual interest. I’ve also hidden less aesthetic items in the storage shelves with sliding doors. The system’s minimalist design makes it suitable for a wide range of decor styles, from minimalist to eclectic spaces.

The wall-mounted units are ideal for small spaces, as they don’t take up much floor space. They are a great solution for anyone looking to maximize their space while maintaining a clean and organized appearance. The modular design allows it to grow and adapt to changing interior design needs, making it a worthwhile purchase for those looking for a customizable shelving solution.

As I’ve been using my String system, it has become a focal point in my bedroom, with the candles and soft lighting adding a touch of warmth to the space. The system’s customizability has also allowed me to create a unique and functional storage solution that suits my needs. It is also easy to disassemble and reassemble, making it easy to move or reconfigure as needed.

Conclusion

While the String Shelving System may seem like a significant investment, it is worth considering for those looking for a high-quality, customizable storage solution. With its sleek design and sturdy construction, it is a great option for anyone looking to add some style and functionality to their space.
